History of Pope John Paul SecondPope John Paul II was the world's most influential religious leader of the century. There have been many religious leaders but none like the pope. In his early years he was known as Karol Jozef Wojtyla. The pope was an athletic man who enjoyed hiking and skiing in the mountains, and was an expert swimmer. He became a priest and eventually helped hide Jewish children from the evil Polish Nazi collaborators. Pope John Paul II was born in Wadowice, in 1920. His parents were a retired army officer and a schoolteacher of Lithuanian ancestry. Indeed, his parents loved this child very much and provided a very devout Catholic home for the future pope. How happy they must have been in Heaven to look down and see all the brave decisions the pope made throughout his life, the thousands of lives he saved in his lifetime championing peace and love throughout the world.
